Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!!!  I am excited at the opportunity to help you and your student(s) to succeed with the Common Core Standards in preparation for high school and beyond.  There are many exciting things happening this year.

Students will be learning a variety of essential skills for their future.  We will be covering a variety of reading and writing structures all embedded in an exploration of real-life topics such as Immigration, Anne Frank, and the World of Work.  Students will learn a variety of strategies and techniques that will help them to stay organized, think critically and analytically, and to evaluate the world around them.  The hope is that students will develop a passion to learn, and that they will become life-long learners.

Students will utilize a variety of tools in order to accomplish these goals, all which are available to the students in and out of the classroom. The primary tool the students will be using is the electronic text book.  This text book allows students access to the materials anywhere there is an Internet source.  Also students will be a part of a Google Classroom where they will be able to complete and submit many of their assignments.  In addition, through this website, students will have access to a variety of tools and assignments including Cornell Notes and Vocabulary Squares graphic organizers that students will learn to usein class and in preparation for writing and presentation assignments.

Students will be graded on a variety of abilities, but the major categories of evaluation will be as follows:

1. Reading Analysis and Research

2. Writing Structure and Content

3. Language Conventions--(Grammar and Vocabulary)

4. Speaking and Listening

5. Testing

PLEASE TAKE NOTE-- ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE WHEN ASSIGNED AND WILL BE REDUCED BY 10% VALUE EACH DAY THEY ARE LATE UNTIL THEY REACH NO VALUE (2 WEEKS).  TO BE CLEAR, THIS MEANS IF A STUDENT TURNS IN AN ASSIGNMENT 2 DAYS LATE, THE PAPER WILL BE GRADED AND FROM THE GRADE THEY EARNED WILL BE DEDUCTED 20%.  SO, IF A STUDENT EARNED 8 OUT OF 10 POINTS THEN AN ADDITIONAL 20% OR 2 POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR BEING LATE AND THE ASSIGNMENT WILL BE ENTERED AS 6/10 IN THE GRADE BOOK.

PLEASE KEEP UP WITH THE ASSIGNMENTS.  YOU MAY FOLLOW CLASS ASSIGNMENTS AND WORK Interactive Assignment Calendar ON THE HOME PAGE HERE ON THIS SITE.

Please be aware, I have included on the homepage of this website a generalized pacing for the Lesson Plans for this class.  However, it will most certainly be adapted throughout the year as needed for time needed, unexpected events such as fire drills, district mandated testing or other events outside of the teacher's control.  This being true, overall, the lesson plans reflect a realistic estimate of the pacing of the curriculum for this class.

There is a lot to learn and to cover in the 8th grade.  Students will need to stay actively involved, on-task in class, and keep up with work outside of class when needed to be successful.  However, at the end of the year, students who challenge themselves to be successful will look back and recognize that they learned an unbelievable amount of information and strategies that will help them as they move forward in their lives.  I look forward to being a part of that.
